The 7 Best Hostels in Rome near a Metro Station

The 7 Best Hostels in Rome near a Metro Station

A way to see Rome without breaking the bank, meet fellow travellers, and easily access public transportation, thereby saving on transportation costs and minimizing carbon footprint? Si!

There’s a ton of accommodation options in the Eternal City — from hotels, apartments, bed and breakfasts, and even the odd castle — but staying in a Roman hostel within walking distance of the Metro has the benefit of being both cheap and convenient. Hostels have come a long way and there are many now that are actually better than hotels.¬†All that’s needed for a comfortable stay is a little research…and we’ve done quite a bit of that for you.

Below is our list of the best hostels in Rome that are near a Metro station. To make it to this list, a hostel had to score at least 4/5 in TripAdvisor, 8/10 in Booking.com, and be within 0.3 km of the nearest subway station. One other hostel — located 0.4 km away from two subway stations — was added to the end of the list (*) because of its exemplary reviews.

The Quick Look table sums up the most important things you need to know about these hostels but if you’re a more visual type of person ( *cough* Instagram *cough* ) the Pick by Pic section should be equally helpful. Finally, Our Choice will get into the details if where we would personally stay and why. Just click on the name/photo of each hostel to be taken to its booking page, where you can find out more about the property — including what previous guests have to say — and enter your travel dates to determine availability.

Our Choice

For us, The RomeHello checks all the boxes:

  • stellar reviews from past guests, with a nearly perfect 9.5/10 rating in Booking.com and an actually perfect 5/5 in TripAdvisor;
  • only 200 m to the nearest subway station, the Repubblica – Teatro dell’Opera Metro Station;
  • availability of private rooms, if we’re so inclined; and
  • a very decent starting price of $13.

For families, especially, The RomeHello is a great option because they accept children — not all hostels do — and if those children are picky eaters who want the comfort of something familiar, there’s actually a McDonald’s just 240 m away. (Though if your kids are up for Italian food, we recommend a stroll to nearby Taverna Pretoriana: good food, inexpensive, and actually patronized by locals — relatively undiscovered by the TripAdvisor hordes.)

However, if you’re female, and you’re not too comfortable sharing quarters with male strangers, and/or you’re arriving to, or departing from, Rome via its central station, Roma Termini, the Hostella Female Only might actually be a better option for you. They also have excellent ratings — 9.3 and 4.5 in Booking.com and TripAdvisor, respectively — and they’re only 300 m away from Roma Termini Metro station, which is itself just beside the main Roma Termini rail station.

Whichever hostel you choose, pick the one that best fits your personality, travel style, and trip itinerary.

Enjoy Rome!
