Piran is a town on the Adriatic coast, on the tip of that appendix-like wedge of Slovenian land sandwiched between Italy and Croatia. Having once been a part of the Most Serene Republic of Venice, Piran has an Italian feel — Venetian vibes without the Venetian crowds — plus a hint of Croatia’s red-hued coastal cities, and a charm and magic totally its own.

Piran is less than 2 hours’ travel from Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. However, while Slovenia does have a decent rail system, Piran itself does not have a train station — the nearest major one is in Koper. Just like with Lake Bled, the best sustainable way to get to Piran from Ljubljana is by bus.

There are eleven hotels, guesthouses, and B&Bs with great reviews and ratings within 650 meters (around 10 minutes’ walk) of the main bus station in Piran. The top picks are described in more detail right below and all eleven are summarized in the table that follows. To ensure quality, all the accommodations shortlisted below needed to have a rating of at least 8/10 at Booking.com — where only verified guests can rate and review hotels — and at least 4/5 in both TripAdvisor and Google Reviews.

1. B&B Miracolo di Mare Retro

This is the nearest highly rated accommodation to the Piran bus station and it’s a great one! The first thing you have to take note of is that there’s another B&B Miracolo di Mare that’s just slightly further up the street, so make sure you have the right one — this is B&B Miracolo di Mare Retro, located at Tomšičeva 23. This guesthouse is nothing fancy but if you just need a clean, convenient, and comfortable place to stay in Piran, this is a really great option. A bonus: they have a cool, leafy garden where breakfast is served and it won’t be unusual for you to be greeted in the morning by the sweet chirps of birds in the garden.

B&B Miracolo di Mare Retro offers double, twin, and triple rooms starting at €90 a night. Children are welcome.

  • Starts at €90

2. Guest House PachaMama

When choosing Guest House PachaMama as our pick for the cheapest accommodation — at €46 a night — within easy walking distance of the bus station, we realized that it was actually one of two accommodations with a similar price range. The other one was Hostel Pirano which is actually nearer to the bus station and has a starting price for its rooms that is one euro less. However, there’s a significant difference in quality between them that justifies paying a euro and walking 250 meters more to stay in Guest House PachaMama. It’s located in the heart of the old town, in a quiet side street just a few meters beyond Tartini Square. The guesthouse offers air-conditioned single, double, and triple rooms. Facilities include a well-equipped shared kitchen and a roof terrace with great views that is the perfect place for partaking of a leisurely breakfast. Indeed you would be hard-pressed to find greater value for money in Piran than Guest House PachaMama.

  • Starts at €46

3. Memento B&B

Memento B&B is hands-down the best bed and breakfast — or any type of accommodation, really — within easy walking distance of the Piran bus station. With now over 1000 reviews from verified previous guests at Booking.com, you might think a slight drop in ratings would be reasonable, but Memento B&B still has eye-wateringly high ratings at 9.6/10, as well as near-perfect scores at both TripAdvisor and Google Reviews.

Why the stellar ratings? Well, the location is one: just a few steps from Tartini Square, the heart of Piran. Breakfast in fact is served in a cafe right on Tartini Square, while in the B&B itself, there are drinks and snacks available 24/7 (it’s impossible to go hungry here). The staff are friendly, attentive and helpful. And the terraces! The views are just breathtaking. There’s also a wide variety of rooms available; aside from the double rooms, some of which have a balcony, there is also a family junior suite that can sleep up to four adult guests, making it perfect for those travelling with family or friends. If we had to go to Piran tomorrow and make a lightning-fast decision on where to stay, there’s no doubt we would choose Memento B&B.

4. Benecanka Casa Veneziana Piran

Well, we couldn’t choose just one “best” — we just had to include Benecanka Casa Veneziana Piran as well! Admittedly, Memento B&B has ever so slightly higher ratings, cheaper room prices, and is also nearer to the bus station compared to Benecanka Casa Veneziana Piran. But sometimes numbers don’t tell the whole story. Indeed, a story is one of the main draws of this exceptional bed and breakfast: the legend goes that this Venetian-style house in the oldest building in Piran was built by a man from Venice for the love of his life, a simple, beautiful girl from Piran.

Fast forward to our own times and this B&B now offers comfortable double rooms to visitors to Piran from all over the world. Located right on Tartini Square, it is close to a lot of restaurants and is also just a few minutes’ walk to the beach. Taking public transportation is always a more sustainable option and anyway, walking is the best way to get around Piran once you’re in the city but if you absolutely need to arrive in a car and you’re staying at Benecanka Casa Veneziana Piran, make sure you get in touch with the B&B so they can secure free parking for you outside the old town and arrange a shuttle to take you to your accommodations.

If you don’t mind a splurge and are feeling the historic Venetian vibes, stay here.

Note: It’s not one of our top picks but we thought we’d mention that Hotel Piran is right on the waterfront — in case that’s a priority for you in finding your perfect accommodation — and it’s also just less than 10 minutes’ walk from the bus station.
