There are thousands upon thousands of places to stay in the Eternal City — from hotels, apartments, bed and breakfasts, and even the odd castle — but staying in a Roman hostel within walking distance of the Metro has the benefit of being both cheap and convenient. Hostels have come a long way and there are many now that are actually leagues better than hotels. All that’s needed for a comfortable, memorable stay is a little research…and we’ve done a lot of that for you.

Below is our list of the best hostels in Rome that are near a Metro station. To make it to this list, a hostel had to score at least 8/10 in Booking.com — where only verified previous guests can submit reviews — and at least 4/5 in TripAdvisor and Google Reviews. It also had to be within 30 meters, or 5 minutes’ walk, of the nearest subway station. (In a moment of weakness, we did include one hostel that was around 500 meters from the nearest Metro station because of its exemplary reviews but we guarantee it won’t disappoint — more on that later.)

Our favorite three hostels are described in more detail below, followed by a table that summarizes all seven picks. There’s a gallery of photos of the hostels after that and finally a FAQs section where we answer hostel-related questions that commonly come up, like which hostels have single rooms and family rooms.

1. The RomeHello

The RomeHello checks all the boxes: stellar reviews from past guests, with nearly perfect ratings in Booking and Google Reviews and an actually numerically perfect 5/5 in TripAdvisor; only 200 m to the nearest subway station, the Repubblica–Teatro dell’Opera Metro Station; availability of private rooms, for those who want the convenience of hostels but prefer to keep their own company while sleeping; and a very decent starting price of €17. The hostel is especially perfect for families with young kids: not only are children accepted into the hostel (something you have to watch out for, as some hostels are adults-only), they actually feature in some of the hostel’s promotional material, which indicates that the hostel values being family-friendly. It isn’t too far from Roma Termini either — about 10 minutes’ walk — so if Rome is just one of the stops on your itinerary, it’s easy to get to and from your other destinations by train.

2. The Beehive

The Beehive is literally just a couple of blocks from Roma Termini and its ratings are nearly as superlative as The RomeHello’s. It has a more homey, laidback vibe, an atmosphere enhanced by the kindness of the owners and staff. Private rooms are available for those who prefer them and the dormitory rooms only contain at most 6 people per room, so you don’t have to worry about being packed like a can of sardines with about a dozen other people. Some rooms have balconies and there are communal areas with greenery, making it a perfect place to relax after your explorations of the Eternal City.

  • 200 meters to Roma Termini
  • 9.1 / 10 at Booking.com, 4.5 / 5 at TripAdvisor, 4.7 / 5 at Google Reviews

3. Ostello Bello Roma Colosseo *

This one we just HAD to include, even if it’s 500 meters away from the nearest Metro station, the Vittorio Emanuele. (That’s less than 10 minutes’ walk anyway.) What makes the hostel so hard to resist — as the near-perfect ratings from previous guests can attest — is its prime location near the Colosseum, top-notch cleanliness, amazing rooftop terrace, wonderful staff…even free food! There are single rooms for solo travellers, quadruple rooms for those travelling with family or friends, and pets are allowed with no extra charges.

  • 500 meters to Vittorio Emanuele Metro station
  • 9.2 / 10 at Booking.com, 4.5 / 5 at TripAdvisor, 4.5 / 5 at Google Reviews
